Celebrating 30 Years of Roots & Shoots A Global Youth Movement for Good

In 2021, Roots & Shoots celebrates 30 years of hope, action, and connection! Three decades ago, Dr. Jane gathered a group of young change-makers on a front porch in Tanzania and started us on our journey to make the world a better place. 30 years later, in all 50 United States and over 60 countries worldwide, thousands of young people are making a difference in their communities and changing the world together.

A Special Message from Dr. Jane for Roots & Shoots’ 30th Anniversary!

Today, the tools and support offered through the Roots & Shoots program empower youth across the globe to use their voices, ideas, and the power of their minds to address the issues in their communities. Since 1991, hundreds of thousands of young people, mentors, parents, and educators have taken action to help others and address community challenges for people, other animals and the environment we share. From Australia, to South Africa, and across the United States, Roots & Shoots youth are not only the future–they are the present– and they are changing the world.

Happy birthday to our Roots & Shoots family!

The world has changed so much in the last 30 years, and Roots & Shoots has transformed along with it, expanding with 63,000 members (and GROWING!) worldwide. This change came in no small part thanks to young people stepping up to be compassionate citizens and leaders on local issues like pollution, animal welfare, and homelessness, as well as global threats like the Climate Crisis, biodiversity loss, and social justice. Along the way, Roots & Shoots has provided the resources to help young people take action on issues that matter to them.

Roots & Shoots has been recognized by the United Nations and the World Health Organization as an innovative way of empowering youth and reinforcing learning and actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). Every single day, Roots & Shoots youth focus on what’s important today for a hopeful future and take what matters into their own hands. From positions in national government, to biomedical engineering, education, animal welfare, conservation, sustainability and beyond, young people over the last 30 years have been able to achieve their ultimate potential, unleashing their spark through Roots & Shoots.

For the next 30 years and beyond, Roots & Shoots will grow the generation taking positive action for all – and we can’t wait to see what a beautiful world you help create by making a difference every single day!

HEY CHANGE-MAKER! Together we can, together we will!

When it comes to taking on the big challenges facing our world, Roots & Shoots members around the world know that together we can & together we will.

Check out how you can participate in all the 30th anniversary celebrations at rootsandshoots.org – we’ll see you there!
