Year-round, the Roots & Shoots U.S. Roots & Shoots Youth Council USA members live by Dr. Jane’s inspirational quote, “What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” This past week, from August 1-5, twenty-two youth leaders gathered with Roots & Shoots staff in southern California for their annual RSYC Summit. The week consisted of everything from youth leader project presentations, to exploring GIS mapping at Esri Headquarters, to building an irrigation system at a local school garden. Spring has sprung and now it’s time to start planting our gardens. With the help of the Roots & Shoots 4-Step Formula, Sacred Heart Elementary School built and planted a sustainable organic garden. This project is part of the Growing Together campaign for Roots & Shoots 25th anniversary, in which Roots & Shoots members around the world are encouraged to go out and plant something. Every fifteen minutes an elephant is killed. That’s about 96 elephants per day, and more than 35,000 each year. That’s the bad news. The good news is that one teen from Vermont has decided to take on this incredible problem and put a stop to it. Poachers are killing elephants for their valuable ivory, which can be sold and made into jewelry and souvenirs. Although the United States has Federal laws banning the sale of ivory, these laws allow for loopholes. In order to truly put a stop to the ivory trade, individual states need to pass their own laws…
