The Jane Goodall Institute is the tangible demonstration of Jane’s vision turned into reality. Just like the rest of the world, JGI staff all over the globe are at home, continuing to work tirelessly to fulfill our mission. So much of what we’re reflecting on now as a team is that our work too often fills our focus, as each of us is completely committed to our efforts to protect great apes and the natural world, improving well-being for people, other species and our planet. But as we work toward that mission, we can sometimes forget how to restore ourselves…

Hey friends, It’s going to be OK. You may be watching the news, dealing with school cancellations and so many other chaotic, scary things right now. We just wanted you to know we’re here for you, and that you’re not alone. During this time, it is so important to think about all the things we have to be hopeful about. Here are a few: We are taking time to reflect on what is most important – our family, our friends, our communities, and our health. Many of us (who are able) are taking time to stay home, to slow down, and to take care of our bodies and minds. We…
We are currently experiencing a great test to our core philosophy – that there is always hope and that hope has the power to transform our world for the better. The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is a crisis that will touch nearly everyone, affecting not only those who become ill, but also so many who are suffering already because of the impact on livelihoods, transportation, the education system and medical services. In the face of this time of uncertainty, and indeed because of it, we are ever more committed to the pursuit of our mission and to spreading hope! We are thinking of all of you and want to share…
This blog was written by JGI Global Chair, Patrick van Veen on behalf of JGI Global Chapters 2020 is a special year for the Jane Goodall Institute because it marks 60 years of science, learning and conservation at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, where Jane Goodall started her ground-breaking research into chimpanzees. What was discovered at Gombe has brought us so much closer to knowing and understanding our closest cousins, the chimpanzees, and thereby so much more about ourselves. Jane Goodall’s remarkable work over the years has gone beyond scientific discovery into conservation and activism and her work as…
Last year, Dr. Jane Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute weighed in on a popular social media post which was making the rounds: a young chimpanzee scrolling on a cellphone. Though some thought the intent was good – demonstrating that chimpanzees are highly intelligent – the result and the backstory of this individual chimpanzee were far more tragic and showcased a growing problem of inappropriate great ape representation on social media. “I am very disappointed to see the inappropriate portrayal of a juvenile chimpanzee in this video which is currently circulating on social media. Chimpanzees are highly social animals, very intelligent and have…
In the struggle to protect endangered species (all great ape species are endangered), it is often missed that human communities are often the ones who likewise suffer. With difficulties obtaining resources, especially with regulations around protected areas, and with the looming threats of wildlife attacks and/or disruption of agriculture, human communities are faced with mounting barriers. But in these complicated cross-hairs lies a solution: In Uganda, the Jane Goodall Institute has been working with local communities to develop community funds which protect local people from losses due to wildlife conflict, helping ensure a better future for all. Budongo and Bugoma Central Forest Reserves…
